If you are a smoker and have been trying to quit smoking for a long time without much success, you may now be thinking of trying electronic cigarettes. With so many people now smoking them, they must be better for you than traditional cigarettes, right?
While the jury has been out on the safety of electronic cigarettes for quite a few years now, with some scientists saying they are no less harmful, there has been welcome news recently in the form of a long-term recent medical study of electronic cigarettes.
Their research was just published in the medical journal Annals of Internal Medicine and, for anyone considering using vapor cigarettes, you should feel far more optimistic.
That is because the study followed a group of ex-smokers over several years. During that time they saw that, by the time smokers had been using electronic cigarettes for six months or more, there were far less levels of cancer causing toxins in their saliva and urine than those who still smoked traditional cigarettes.
How was the study carried out? — Two groups of smokers were followed over several years. A group that smoked conventional cigarettes, and one that switched to electronic or vapor cigarettes.
When their blood and urine was tested, the scientists saw a marked difference in toxicity levels in the electronic cigarette smoking group.
This also caused the lead scientist on the study, Dr Lion Shahab, to say it is now believed smoking electronic cigarettes is far safer over the long-term than is smoking conventional cigarettes.
Is smoking electronic cigarettes as safe as not smoking? — Of course, if you would love to be able to smoke some kind of cigarette rather than quit smoking altogether, you may want to know if smoking vapor cigarettes is as safe as not smoking at all.
No, it is not as, even with electronic cigarettes, you will still end up with some exposure to toxins. What you need to know, however, is that it will be far less.
So, if quitting smoking entirely is not a possibility for you right now, then going the electronic cigarette route is definitely going to be a good and much safer option.
Will you get less nicotine with electronic cigarettes? — Interestingly too, the same study also showed that people who smoked electronic cigarettes still got around the same amount of nicotine from them every time they smoked one.
The only difference was their bodies absorbed less.
This also means switching to electronic cigarettes is even more of a viable alternative to traditional smoking than was thought previously.
Simply because getting the same amount of nicotine will make it easier for many smokers to deal with the cravings they often experience when they try to quit completely.
